NIME | Unites

Unites is an interactive music piece created with two kitchen scale for the New Interfaces for Musical Expression course.
I hacked two kitchen scales to Arduino and with MaxMSP I assigned piano tones for values coming out from the pressure of a certain weight loaded on the scale.

How does it work:

Each scale, while playing  music, will also be controlling simultaneously one interactive ball on the screen that appears when a note is played or when in other words a certain weight is applied on the scale:
– If the weight or pressure applied is light, the note is in the high range and the ball will appear at the top left of the screen.
– If the weight or pressure applied is heavy, the note is in the low range and the ball will appear at the down right of the screen.
Depending on the pressure, the values of the ball are mapped on a diagonal line that goes from top left to down right of the screen.

I played the two scales with my fingers, controlling the pressure on each scale made it possible for me to compose for NIME. Below a video link of the performance:
